That's it and that's that
Finally! I've turned in my master thesis and am now oficially out of
school...
Below the abstract from my thesis:
This thesis takes an analytic view on the potential use of weblogs as a tool
in teaching writing, with an offset in weblogs as a platform for the
collaboration of writing groups. Furtermore, this thesis surveys the general
recommendations in writing pedagogy to find ways of combining weblog technology
and writing pedagogy.
The first part of the thesis describes the weblog as a
phenomenon in relation to general educational uses, and dissects the
standardfuntions of the weblog to provide the reader with an introduction in and
understanding of the technology upon which the weblog is based.
The second
part very specifically analyses how the weblog as an Internet based tool of
communication supports the writing group in relation to aspects such as feedback
and revision of texts. Furtermore the thesis offers ideas on how to use weblogs
as electronic portfolios and digital research papers as a tool to inspire the
reflective student.
The thesis concludes that weblogs still cannot match the
existing word-processing tools regarding revision and commenting on texts.
Instead, the thesis offers some recommendations on and examples of the use of
weblogs as a personal and collaborative learning tool.

[DK] udkast...

Stretching my mind
Having slept 4 hours this night and pushing my thesis deadline, I stumbled upon these zen stories to tell your neighbors as I did some stress-relieving blog-hopping. My overheating brain fizzles as the soothing calm of buddist logic enters my head...

Well, plug me in...
It's not the Matrix yet, but there is definately an upcoming trend of merging
leisure and electronics in a cyborgish way. This article brings
the news of gameplaying experience being enhanced by electrical microcurrents to
the inner ear.
Alledgedly the sensation of locomotive videogames such as car
or flight simulators is affected.
Who knows - maybe one day my idea of the
blinking diode-piercing will come through...
Update 11.12.03:
I apparently screwed up linking the relevant article

Living Writing
Mark Bernstein internet writer,
storyteller and probably a lot more has some good pointers for writing to the
web.
I guess the general message is to express all facets of the perosn
you are when writing to the living web. I am trying to get that idea
aligned/combined with writing in academia. Here your personality is made out of
the assignments you turn in, and even if you turn very personal papers in all
the time, the identity that most people convey through writing is limited to
their professional or educational contexts. Yes, the increase in text
communication generally may result in an increase of expressing yourself through
writing, but that writing is not public in the same way as academic writing. So
what I am pithcing at here and in my thesis is that teaching writing could
benefit from using web logs as a way to get students to explore their writing
identities to a fuller extent, merging the identities of different writing
contexts.

The basic outline tool
Although I have the greatest belief in computers and their capacities, a
thing that they just can't do is to provide a full text, easy editable, WYSIWYG
overview over long texts.
And thus my basic outline tool came to the rescue
once again...

New Strategy
I've been trying to hide my socalled receeding hairline with the sporty
close-cut look to imply that my baldiness was voluntary. It is not so, and I've
decided to try out a new strategy - commonly known as 'confuse the enemy'. I've
therefore applied zebra-stripes to the top of my head, hoping that no one will
pay notice to my lack of hair - as they say: 'Less is more'.

Speechfigures enter text realms?
The use of strike through when writing texts on the internet, can be seen as
an application of the rhetorical figure paralipsis,
which can be used foolishly ironically, stating and drawing attention to
something in the very act of pretending to pass it over. This is mainly a figure
used in spoken language, but here the demonstration of one's first thoughts adds
to the message.

A new era of php blogging
Well, yesterday I helped my girlfriend buy a .dk domain and a webhotel in
order to set up a weblog for her (that is a good thing!).
Being very happy
with the way MT works that was my
first option. Unfortunately the webhotelproviders at Surftown don't want to enable cgi-scrips for
security reasons. So, after som cursing, I began a search for php-based weblog
applications. I first encountered nucleus and installed that, but it doesn't
support trackback etc, so the search went on. This morning Jens pointed me in the direction of WordPress which looks very promising.
Unfortunately I am quite in writing mode for now, so I'll have to restrain
myself from burrying myself in the installation and modification for now...

Vitia weblog
Now here is a weblog on
rhetoric and commuication that takes the verbose potential that I see i weblogs
to the fullest extent I have seen this far. The blogger, a PhD researcher, has
quite a theoretically solid interrest in teaching composition with commuication
technology, it seems. The considerations here are combined with a
sociological/socio-political view on teaching and education.
I found his site
searching for thouhts on ownership of texts published digitally in a writing
pedagogy framework.
This post has some
good views and thoughts on that. But man, the verbosity...

Departure information
It just dawned to me that using the 'title' attribute when linking is an
excellent tool for providing 'departure information', adressing some of Landow's
concerns on the rhetoric of arrival and departure in hyperlinks. See his books
on amazon.
It's
quite simple really:
<a title="this is where the information goes"
href="http://thesite of interrest">The link tekst</a> - which renders
like this: The link tekst
It took me a
little while to figure out to use & l t; (without spaces) instead of the
left angle symbol: < to get the actual html-code showing...
I guess there
is a simpler/cooler way of doing this, but at least this works.
Anyhow, the discussion of how to use link-information goes on. Jacob Nielsen has some
thougths on that. For the moderate view go here.

Sharing and Responding
Found this excelent summary from Peter Elbow and Pat Belanoff, Sharing and Responding. Again a lot of uses of feedback that easily transform to a theory of using weblogs in a writing pedagogical setting.
Writing, thinking, linking and learning
Trying to explain the advantages of using weblogs as a tool for learning I
see two major aspects in this matter:
Having said that I cannot wait to complete this master thesis that fills my
days and nights. Although weblogs in general and as educational tools
specifically hold my interrest, taking off to New Zealand is just a whole other
ball game!

Pitfalls of dispersed learning
Reflecting on the effects of the asynchronity that often characterizes the
dialogue taking place in the comments of a weblog post, it seems that
distributed teaching may cause the participants to use the teacher in a
dispersed manner – which forces the teacher to either attend student needs as
they appear or to attend them in allocated time slots, much like ordinary
consultations. It is therefore quite important to establish an agreement of
teaching and responding modus between students and teacher. Misconceptions of
work format and mode of feedback can lead students to feel neglected, because
the students expect immediate feedback to their questions.
Agreement on
matters of activity from both students and teachers is therefore an important
issue to clarify, when implementing a weblog in teaching.

Writing with blogs
Once again I stumbled across an article on using weblogs in education, this time actually focusing on the weblog as a writing tool. Article here.

list via this site -
which also lists different approaches to using weblogs in research and teaching.
That site was found via this

something about that 'sites of interrest'-list soon).
To conclude my tale of

article on the barriers for using e-learning in education, found via the elearnspace blog.

Drupal vs MovableType
This seems to be a recurring subject for me, but nonetheless I am still
contemplating the differences, pros and cons to these two platforms.
This
blog is maintained through MT and that works nicely - I am beginning to get the
draft of how Tags etc are used, but am at the same time made aware of the
features that MT (and weblogs in general) lack in order to be a good teaching
platform - which is my ultimate goal.
On drupal.org there's a discussion of
Drupal vs MT where some of
the differences between the two and the most common feature requests (according
to the writer) are listed.
In my world, what I need for MT to work better as
a teaching platform is this:
I have a vague memory of a feature in drupal where entries automatically start forum subjects - commenting is then made somewhat easier, due to the forum tools.
Update: There seems to be widespread satisfaction with using MTThreadedComments (mentioned in the MT-support thread above). Also a lot of people out there recommend MTThreadMail as a supplement. Will implement it soon!

Know thyself...
...well that Matrix quote sounds reasonable and thus I embarked on a tour of 'which [concept] are you' that the internet holds such an abundance of. Each concept carries a description and the result is that
The result is that if I
were an OS I'd be Windows XP: "Under my bright and cheerful exterior is a
strong and stable personality. I have a tendency to do more than what is asked
or even desired". My evilmeter points at 'neutral',
alledgedly because "I am able to control my inner deamons and often find myself
in the peacemaking role." Oddly my villain test renders me as a
super villain "I have an incredible amount of power over people, although I am
short tempered with a tendency to blow things up." My nearest match is Lex
Luthor.
If taking part in
'The Matrix' I'd be Tank: "Loyal till the end, sparing no expense in
ensuring the well-being of others". My Star Wars alignment
test tells me that my moral standings are those of a true jedi "a keeper of
peace -and when that fails lightsabering my foe's asses from here to Tatooine (I
dont' know if there's a geourl for
that...). My pre-85
videogame-character-alter-ego(that's a long word!) is the Jet-Pacman - "I
love the outdoors; the sense of freedom, of adventure. I love the sensation of
free-fall, and would parachute and bungee jump on a moment's notice." (Now, that
is precise!)
It seems that I
taste like either peanut butter "...one of the most blendable flavours; I go
with sweet, I go with sour, I go with bland, I go with
anything..."
or
menthol - "refreshingly different, but something of
an acquired taste; some people don't appreciate that." Maybe there is a market
niche for menthol-peanut butter...
Adding to that - i am a striped ,friendly 2.
Although I find myself blogging quite frequently - I only scored 48/100 on
the Blogaholic-test...
I
can live with that. To score 100/100 I should probably take the last zillion
quizzes out there and include them in this little survey.
But that could be remedied if you told me what results and quizzes you have taken lately.

[DK] trackbackfunktionstester
The blogospere is growing
This white paper from perseus documents the growth in the blogosphere. Quoting:
Based on the rapid growth rate demonstrated by the leading services, we expect the number of hosted blogs created to exceed five million by the end of 2003 and to exceed ten million by the end of 2004.
Hmm. The figures sound impressive - altough the withepaper concludes that approximately 66% of the blogs are abandoned shortly after being created. Also, the statistics does not account for bloggers with multiple blogs. Still 1.6 mio blogs updated at a regular basis is quite a few.

Today I became aware that my fancy for MT as courseware might have been the

Contemplating the function of the writing group it ocurred to me that
students in writing groups might reach higher levels of selv-efficacy by peer

[DK] Giver billigere smøger flere rige mennesker?
grundlag for noget konspirationsteori her...

Der er en masse viden at hente her - faldt over lidt forskelligt, men titlen Surface Waves and their Interaction With Floating Bodies mindede mig om et vedvarende energi-projekt der via en flyder forbundet til en dynamo på bunden udnytter bølgeenergien. Fed ide!

working on my ignorance
Realizing that although I claim my ignorance to be an advantage, I am also
drawn toward that which I don't understand - in this case the question what can PHP
do?
Someday this might be useful knowledge...
Update:
It appears that php can do 'anything' - in this case I take it
that the risc of my free-flowing mind being reined by minute knowledge of how
thing work is not imminent.

The organizational structure of teaching
Contemplating the organizational resemblance between the industrial production line and 'tombstone'-teaching I discovered that there has been put some thougt into that subject. The article Leadership without the hero architechture [.pdf] takes an architechtural perspective on leadership and organization.
Update:
Fletcher points out that in architechture and engineering, a shift
from file to data centered workprocesses is on its way and considers the way
ICTs may change our collaborate work processes. Quoting:
"This change is not
comparable with the move from manual to electronic drafting, because the
migration did not require a change in process, merely the learning of a new
technique."
- so at some point in the not so distant future, collaboration on
a project may be fully virtual and centralized. All information is in one
location and is shaped locally by many participators.
Some issues on
simultaneus work processes occur, but as of now I don't posess the technical
insigt to deliberate on that.

archive template mania v.1
I haven't tried it out yet, but plugins by nonplus might be the solution to my quest for a dispersed weblog. I started this thread in the MT support forum, to get some inputs from all the MT-experts out there.
If I had known then...
...what I know now - I would have read this tutorial
before doing anything else.
But, it´s never to late to stop being
ignorant...

gennem gamle retorik-mapper:
Huo kand huo vil Sig Sette ned
Sig Selff
ihiel at gremme
Ney, Nej ieg baade troer och veed
Mig løchen ey schall
glemme
Er hun mig end i dag Jmoed
Och Siunis Som Forborgen
Hun kand
igien dog komme goed
Och Finde mig i morgen
... (se hele molevitten i fuldtekst).
Nudansk:
Den
kan som vil sig sætte ned
sig selv ihjel at græmme
Nej, nej jeg både tror
og ved
mig lykken ej skal glemme
- er hun mig idag imod
og synes som
forborgen

Speaking for itself...
Leadership Communication: Using storytelling to share knowledge, build corporate culture.
Quoting:
Harvard Professor Howard Gardner says, Leadership involves the
creation of powerful narratives...that are much more than mission statements or
messages. They are actual stories where there are goals and obstacles, where
good and bad things can happen along the way, and where the people involved feel
part of an enterprise that's trying to end up in a better place. Find out how
top businesses are using stories to share knowledge and build effective
corporate cultures.

In practice, knowledge management often encompasses identifying and mapping intellectual assets within the organization, generating new knowledge for competitive advantage within the organization, making vast amounts of corporate information accessible, sharing of best practices, and technology that enables all of the above -including groupware and intranets.

Fundamentals
Now, having breached the empty page I ventured out to find a fitting stylesheet for this blog. A quick <a href="http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&hl=da&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=movable+type+styles">google</a> search led me to <a href="http://www.bookofstyles.org/">bookofstyles</a> via <a href="http://ufies.org/archives/000552.html">ufies.org/</a> (note to readers:I'm testing the concept of link-lix; does the number of links per word in a web-text affect reader experience?). Anyhow, it seems that there are quite a fex picks to choose from altough my search for a <a href="http://whatisthematrix.warnerbros.com/">Matrix</a> inspired stylesheet was unsuccessfull...
a small step for me...
This is my first blog in english. I have started up several blogs in danish,
but I feel compelled to follow the lead of my peers and maintain a blog in
english. Here I will try to express my weblog experiences and explore this
medium on a practical as well as a more academic level.
Fundamentally my
interest in weblogs has sprung out of an interrest in knowledge management - and
my prime interrest in weblogs thus is in their value as tool for knowledge
sharing. For me, the more technical domains of weblogging such as rss and
various other acronyms are still uncharted lands, but someday...
For now, all I can say is that it seems to me that we've only just seen the tip of the weblog iceberg; due to the versality of blogs my guess is that they in time will be one of the dominant forms of web-publishing applications.
